Misson Statement

Inland Northwest Honor Flight’s mission is to transport Inland Northwest war veterans to Washington D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.

Inland Northwest Honor Flight is a regional hub of Honor Flight Network, and was founded in May 2009. Our aim is to serve as many veterans as possible and will do our best to transport any veterans within the eastern Washington and northern Idaho area who served during the Honor Flight recognized periods of conflict. While we are most certainly accepting applications from WWII and Korean War veterans, the vast majority traveling with us now are Vietnam War veterans, on a first come, first served basis. If any of our applicants are suffering from a terminal illness, we have a process to prioritize their application.

FAQs

  • Any man or woman serving in active duty anywhere or anytime during the following dates is a veteran of the war/conflict. Priority is given to veterans of earlier war/conflicts and to any terminally ill veterans.

    • Korean War: June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955

    • Vietnam War: February 28, 1961-May 7, 1975

    • Lebanon/Grenada: August 24, 1982-July 31, 1984

    • Panama: December 20, 1989-January 31, 1990

Terminally ill veterans should contact us at 509-624-0222 or info@inwhonorflight.org for specific instructions.

  • Guardians are selected by our Flight Selection Team based on a number of factors. For a typical flight, the Guardian-to-Veteran ratio is 1 guardian for 3 veterans. For veterans who require a wheelchair, the Guardian-to-Veteran ratio is 1-to-1. (Guardians can be assigned more than one veteran, but a veteran will never be assigned more than one guardian.) Family members of veterans who have been selected to go on the Honor Flight will have priority to be a guardian for their veteran family member.

Guardians are typically between 18 and 64 years of age. In some cases we do accept Guardians under the age of 18 with parent/guardian permission. Additionally, people who are age 65 and up may be considered with a medical review from our medical team. Many times guardians will be assisting veterans into or out of wheelchairs, up and down stairs, etc. Guardians do pay for their trip and must attend a mandatory training session(s).

Guardian fees are due once a guardian has been notified they are on a specific flight. Guardian fees can then be paid with a credit card, through our PayPal account, brought to the mandatory guardian training session, or mailed to 608 W 2nd, Ste 309, Spokane, WA 99201-4430 The current guardian fee is $950.00, and includes airfare, meals, lodging, and transportation.

Important Note: Family members of veterans are invited to apply to be part of our guardian team. However, we are unable to guarantee the veteran they will be selected for the flight. When filling out a guardian application, it is important that you indicate on the guardian application the veteran you wish to fly with. In order to ensure the safety of all on our flight, guardians are selected based on a number of factors.

  • Veterans can request a trip together and are encouraged to apply at the same time as we take veterans on a first come, first served basis. Please be sure to note the name of the veteran you would like to travel with in your application.

  • We are unable to accommodate spouses unless they are eligible veterans themselves. If a spouse however, provides primary caregiver services to their veteran, who is of diminished capacity, they may go on the trip as a Guardian.

  • Sadly, the answer is “no”. Adding spouses and widows simply isn’t an option for our program at this time.

  • Veteran and Guardian applications can be downloaded from our website or, you may call us at (509) 624-0222 to request that one be mailed to you.

  • Our veterans have already sacrificed and given so much through their service to our country, therefore we feel they should not have to pay for the trip. All expenses for their Honor Flight are covered.

Flights are funded by donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other groups who wish to be an important part of honoring these heroes and recognize the need to get our veterans to see their memorial before it is too late. No funding is received from the government. Guardians are required to pay a reduced price for the honor of escorting a veteran to Washington DC. (Pricing varies based on rates for airfare and accommodations.)

  • No. A guardian will be provided for each veteran, unless a family member has sent in a guardian application requesting to fly with a specific veteran. (See above for guardian requirements.)

  • You are required to provide your own transportation to and from Spokane International Airport.

  • Every person has to have some form of government photo ID to get through security. This includes an state issued driver’s license, passport or birth certificates if they have a photo identifying them. You can also go to the DMV and get a state issued ID. For more information on accepted travel identification, please review the TSA Checkpoint ID requirements.

  • Please check our website and social media pages periodically for flight updates. The general public is always invited to welcome our returning heroes home the evening of the flight. (Due to security restrictions, it is not recommended that the public come to the airport the morning of a flight.)

  • Donate! We need your financial support in order for these Honor Flights to continue. Please visit our Donation page for the various ways to give.

Volunteer! Each Honor Flight and our funraising events require many volunteers to make happen. Visit you Get Involved page for more information.

  • WHEELCHAIRS – A number of our veterans require wheelchairs, and our deluxe motor coaches are ordered based on how many require a wheelchair lift. We provide a wheelchair for each veteran who requires one.

INWHF does not provide oxygen tanks. Veterans must make their own arrangements for concentrators or delivery at our hotel. If further information is needed, email us at info@inwhonorflight.org.

OXYGEN – If a veteran requires oxygen, their health care provider must supply a prescription for it which identifies the delivery method (mask or nasal cannula), frequency (as needed or continuously), and the rate of delivery (liters per minute). Oxygen concentrators will be provided on the airplane for those that require them. Once in DC, you will be on bottled oxygen while we have the concentrators re-charged for our flight back to Houston.

  • As a Veteran or guardian, you will be given a t-shirt that you may wear. Veterans, please feel free to wear all or any part of your uniform. Depending on the time of year, please plan to wear a jacket.

  • Medications DO NOT need to be in their original containers. Please bring a 3-day supply just in case.

  • No. Veteran applications are filled on a first come, first served basis. Donations are always accepted but cannot be dedicated to a certain veteran.

Honor Flight is HEALING

Honor Flight provides a healing journey for our veterans, offering them a chance to reflect and find closure. Many of these men and women, especially our Vietnam veterans, never saw support or appreciation for their service. Honor Flight fosters a deep sense of emotional healing through the interactions experienced during their trip.

Honor Flight is CAMARADERIE

Honor Flight fosters a spirit of camaraderie among veterans, bringing them together to share their stories and experiences. The trip creates lasting bonds and a sense of brotherhood that extends beyond the journey itself.

Honor Flight is GRATITUDE

Honor Flight is a profound expression of gratitude, honoring the sacrifices made by our veterans. The journey offers veterans a sincere thank you, showing them how much their service is appreciated.
